Facilitating Groups to Self-Organize

Yesterday I co-facilitated a meeting with another Agile coach. Near the end of the meeting, one of the participants made a comment to the effect that I probably didn't imagine when I was growing up that I would be a meeting facilitator. Strangely enough, in a way I did!

I also had a phone conversation this morning with an individual who is interested in reviewing one of the courses that I facilitate. Part of our discussion reminded me of the story of how I got interested in this sort of stuff.

When I was a boy, I was very interested in science and technology. I read lots of books about biology, electricity, robots. I also had the pleasure of playing with discarded video equipment that my dad would bring home from work. By "playing" really I mean "breaking". I also disassembled adding machines, reel-to-reel tape players, stereos, etc. Aside from Lego though, I wasn't very good at re-assembling. Eventually I really got interested in math as well and then computers. The story of how I got interested in math is also the story of how I got interested in education.

One weekend, when I was in Grade 2, probably seven years old, I went on a trip with my dad to visit my grandpar
