Announcement: Scrum Team Assessment updates

The Scrum Team Assessment has been used by 36 teams so far including 15 teams in Asia.  The organizations that have used it are involved in many industries including high tech, mining, media, human resources, engineering, telecomm, and financial services.  We launched the official “Professional” version in January and have great success with teams using it to improve their Scrum and Agile practices.

Two interesting results to come out of the Scrum Team Assessment so far:

  • Most Scrum teams are scoring “B’s” and “A’s” on the Scrum rules
  • Organizations are doing a poor job of supporting their Scrum teams to encourage high-performance

Of course, this is still a pretty small sample size.  I’m looking forward to that growing significantly over the next few months.

The latest update of the Scrum Team Assessment includes the following changes:

  • More complete statistical data about how your team compares to other teams
  • Updated expert system rules (these will continue to evolve!)
  • New and updated recommendations
  • Numerous report formatting improvements for better clarity
  • Several minor bug-fixes

This is a minor revision to our “Professional” level tool.  We are still planning a big announcement for new “Basic” and “Advanced” pricing levels soon!  Stay tuned…

Announcement: Agile Coaching Patterns Wiki

Coaches for Agile teams and organizations is a growing profession.  I’ve been coaching for a long time, and I’ve used/invented/learned-about many different techniques or interventions for coaching in the context of Agile teams.  I have recently started a Wiki to capture some of this information.  (Originally, I was hoping to write a book, but I don’t have the time to do it on my own or even to coordinate a multi-author effort.)  This is an open invitation to participate in the wiki.  I won’t make it fully open (like wikipedia), instead, it will be by invitation.  Connect with me on LinkedIn and mention you would like to contribute, and I will set you up with an account… and then you can go nuts :-)  If there end up being several contributors, I’ll make a block on the front page for links to contributors and/or their organizations.

Check out the Agile Coaching Patterns wiki.

The Scrum Team Assessment – Official Launch

Hi Everyone,  I don’t do announcements on here too often, but I wanted to let everyone know about the official launch of our new product: the Scrum Team Assessment – an online tool for your team to get a report on how well they are using the Scrum framework… and most importantly, helpful recommendations on how to improve!  This is a fully automated Scrum maturity assessment tool!

The Scrum Team Assessment is based on the years that I and two other coaches (Paul Heidema and Travis Birch) have been working with Scrum and Agile teams to improve business and technical results.  The Scrum Team Assessment is a joint effort that has resulted in a fully automated virtual coach for your team.

The analysis is both statistical and expert-system based.  This means that the report has basic information about how the team is following Scrum, and, more importantly, clear how-to advice to get your team to make improvements.  There are “quick wins” which are easy but will have a significant impact as well as long-term recommendations that are often harder, but will drive your team to a high-performance state.

The Scrum Team Assessment includes a survey of about 100 questions that focus on seven broad categories:

  • The team’s environment
  • The basic Scrum process
  • The Product Backlog
  • Team Membership
  • ScrumMastering
  • Product Ownership
  • and Agile best practices

Every team member fills in the survey to help us generate a valid set of recommendations.

The Scrum Team Assessment is $496/team/use (that’s Canadian dollars).  If you have several teams or wish to obtain an enterprise license, please contact us at sales@berteigconsulting.com or +1-905-868-9995.

The State of Scrum: a report from the Scrum Alliance

This report provides some excellent information about the state of Scrum based on a survey of over 500 professionals.  I hope that the scope of this survey grows to include many more people over time so that the results are more reliable.

Here is one interesting quote from the report:

Insight #3: The long-term success of Scrum is about creating a culture and making Scrum principles and practices the “new normal.”

Lots of interesting data in the report that backs that up!

The link to the report as well as a webinar and presentation deck are available on the Scrum Alliance site.

100 Monkeys… great new blog

Earlier today at the Inspirational Expo in London Ontario, I met two young, enthusiastic people: Brette Hamilton and John Preston.  Brette and John told me that they had grown frustrated with working in traditional media and had started 100 Monkeys as a way to bring a positive focus to the world… to share stories that would help rather than hinder, discourage, or cause grief.  Their tag line is “A positive media site”… I hope you take the time to visit them!  Here is a photo from the event:

100 Monkeys - Brette and John

Thanks to Brette and John to a great attempt at building a professional career on something positive!  I wish them well, and I hope you all visit them often, and help them out in whatever way you can!  (Sharing the link is probably the easiest!  Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or your own blog!)

Agile Advice Book

Hi Everyone!  I’m writing a compilation book of the best articles of Agile Advice (as well as some that may not have been so popular, but which I think are important).  I was wondering what you all think are the best articles from our archives so that I can be sure to include them!  The best way to vote, since there are soooo many articles about Agile, Scrum, OpenAgile, Management, Org Change etc. etc. is to simply write a comment on the articles you think are the best and worth including in a book!  You can comment on any of the articles: feel free to brows through the archives, go by subject, do searches, etc.  As well, if you have any suggestions for specific blog posts that you always wish I had written, please comment in the section below.  I will be including three brand new articles in the book that won’t be published here as stand-alone articles.  If there are enough interesting suggestions for articles in the comments here, I will also choose up to three ideas to write about for special inclusion in the book and if you made the suggestion, I will including a credit to you for the question (if you want me to, otherwise you are free to remain anonymous).  I’m hoping to get the first draft of the book out by the end of January since I’ve already put a lot of work into it, and that draft will be available for free here online for a limited time.  The final draft will be self-published and I will provide links here to those who want to purchase it.

Thanks for your loyal readership and thanks in advance for your votes and suggestions!

- Mishkin.
